Community Assistants (CA)


Sixteen undergraduate or graduate students are employed by the Department of University Housing and Residence Life as Community Assistants.  The CA is assigned to live and work on an area ranging in size from 45 to 55 students. Students who are selected to serve as CAs have demonstrated responsibility, maturity, sensitivity, and a strong desire to grow and be challenged.

Meet the Community Assistants

While CA job responsibilities vary somewhat according to the characteristics and needs of the different assigned areas, the CA is generally responsible for creating and maintaining a living environment conducive to the academic success and physical, social, and emotional well-being of the residents. Community Assistants function at the highest level in the areas of:

  • Role Modeling and Leadership
  • Resource Assistance and Referral
  • Student and Community Development
  • Safety and Security Awareness
  • Community Standards Regulation
  • Facilities and Occupancy Management
  • University Housing Administration  

Minimum requirements for CAs are:

  • Sophomore standing.
  • Residency on campus housing for at least one full semester.
  • Enrolled as a full-time, on-campus AASU student.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Ability to balance academic, work, personal, and co-curricular commitments.
  • Successful completion of an extensive selection process.

Residence Education Coordinator (REC)

Mr. Frank Twum-Barimah is responsible for the Compass Point community and paraprofessional staff supervision, the residence education program and conferences and camps management. He directly supervises Community Assistants and residents in the Compass Point community. Mr. Twum-Barimah will serve as initial contact for residents, parents, prospective residents, and other stakeholders inquiring about or voicing concerns, input, or questions related to Compass Point. He may be contacted about:
  • Recruiting, hiring, orienting, supervising and evaluating Community Assistants at Compass Point.
  • Community Assistant programming efforts.
  • Recognition of Community Assistants and other stakeholders internal and external to the department.
  • Community Assistant resource materials and work space.
  • On-duty schedule for paraprofessional staff.
  • Disciplinary intervention and action for residential students.
  • Basic counseling and intervention with students experiencing interpersonal, academic, or other developmental difficulties.
  • Opportunities for resident expression and involvement.
  • Policies, procedures and processes.

Assistant Director for Residence Education

Craig Wymer is responsible for the residential education program; assessment and planning; and residential staff supervision. The Assistant Director collaborates with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to promote student learning and community development.

The Assistant Director will serve as initial contact for residents, parents, prospective residents, and other stakeholders inquiring about or voicing concerns, input, or questions related to University Crossings or University Terrace.

  • Resident application/contract renewal process.
  • Room assignment process.
  • Residential student learning and development.
  • First-year Residential Learning Communities.
  • Residential Student Association.
  • UC and UT Community Council.
  • Disciplinary intervention and action for residential students.
  • Recruiting, hiring, orienting, supervising and evaluating Residence Education Coordinator(s) and Community Assistants at University Crossings or University Terrace.
  • Residential policies, procedures and processes.
  • Community Assistant programming efforts at University Crossings or University Terrace.
  • Marketing activities.
  • Assessment and evaluation activities.
  • Basic counseling and intervention with students experiencing interpersonal, academic, or other developmental difficulties.
  • Opportunities for resident expression and involvement.

Assistant Director for Housing Operations

Responsible for primary functions necessary for the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of University Housing and Residence Life. The Assistant Director for Housing Operations supervises the central office; occupancy management; safety and security issues; facilities maintenance; and technology services.
  • Move-in and move-out processes.
  • Conferences and camps.
  • Collection of resident payments and refunds.
  • Fire, health and safety inspections and drills.
  • Fire safety and security procedures and the emergency response plan.
  • Routine and emergency maintenance service request responses.
  • Cleanliness, maintenance, and landscape or grounds issues.
  • Utility consumption.
  • Furniture, fixture and equipment replacement program.
  • Technology systems, solutions, and approaches.
  • Key and access card control.
  • Cable television, Internet connectivity, and phone service.
  • Relationships and contact with vendors.

Director of University Housing

Mr. Corey Reedy is responsible for using available resources to achieve the University Housing Mission.  He plans and oversees all housing activities to ensure an educationally sound and secure environment for all students living on-campus.
